Recipients are expected to work in the federal government for one year after graduating in order to fulfill their service obligation.

The Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a highly competitive program that offers students from all over the world the opportunity to study abroad and gain proficiency in critical foreign languages. 

The program was created by the US Department of State in 2006 with the aim of increasing the number of Americans who are proficient in strategically important foreign languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Korean.

The program usually lasts 8-10 weeks and provides participants with a variety of language learning opportunities, such as classes, seminars, and cultural activities. 

The curriculum is designed to help students achieve maximum language proficiency in the shortest amount of time possible. 

In addition to full financial support, CLS participants also receive support from their home institutions and the US Department of State. Upon completion of the program, they will have the opportunity to become certified in the language they studied and use it professionally or continue their studies at home or abroad.

The program seeks to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad, and it supports students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in these types of international experiences.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is available to undergraduate students from all majors who plan to study abroad for at least four weeks during the academic year or summer session. Students must demonstrate financial need and meet certain criteria related to the length and type of study abroad program.

Benefits of the program include:

• Up to $5,000 for an undergraduate student participating in a study abroad program. 
• Support for international internships of up to four weeks. 
• Recipients are eligible to apply for a Follow-on Service Project Grant, which provides up to an additional $3,000 in funding to support post-study abroad service projects that promote long-term engagement with the country or region of study.
